Hey there! Today, I wanted to do something different. I thought sharing some things you may not know about me would be a good way to get to know me a little better, especially for those that are new around here. It’s always fun getting to know other people, so I encourage you to leave something about yourself in the comments below! π
1. Growing up (and even now), my family never celebrated Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
Let me start by saying that this in no way means we don’t love and appreciate our parents. If anything, I’m actually glad that we never celebrated this because it sort of helped me look for ways to show my gratitude and love towards them and not waiting until these 2 holidays to write them a letter or buy them a gift. I’ll also say that to each their own. I don’t judge anyone that does celebrate them as everyone has their own reasons for doing or not doing something.
But, this topic is pretty controversial. My parents were always indifferent about celebrating these 2 holidays. I would always be reminded repeatedly, “Every day should be Mother’s Day and Father’s Day”. Not meaning that they should receive presents every day, but that my sister and I should treat them with respect, do as they asked, and have loving hearts year-round. Although the majority of people may not agree with this mindset, my mom had a few reasons for wanting to make it just like any other day.
- The commercialization. Receiving gifts and flowers just because there’s a sense of pressure to do so takes away a lot of the meaning behind it. Similar to how others don’t like Valentine’s Day because it feels like a marketing event, the same goes for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
- Future grieving. When a loved one passes away, certain days out of the year come around that make the grieving process that much harder. My mom has always said that not celebrating these 2 days will hopefully lessen the emotional and mental toll on my sister and me, the day one of them is no longer with us.
- Random acts of gratitude. Not necessarily with gifts, but just building that mentality of “it doesn’t have to be a holiday or birthday to do something nice or buy that item that reminds me of them”. I think a good example of this is when I was little (maybe 4 or 5), I saw my parents stressing out about money. I had no idea what it was for or how much, but I didn’t care. I went into my room, poured out all my change from my plastic dinosaur, and put it in an envelope with a note. The note must have said something along the lines of “I love you! Please don’t worry, here is some help”. Honestly, it might have only been less than $5 (LOL) in change. I didn’t count it but I remember thinking I was actually solving all of their problems. Oh to be young again. π But as I grew up and began having my own part-time jobs, I helped whenever I saw there was a need and have done so happily.
2. Christmas was never about the gifts.
Kind of like with what I explained above, my mom instilled in our minds at a young age that Christmas was about Jesus’ birthday and not so much about the gifts. Some years we give each other a present or two, but for the most part, we go without gifts each year. In case you’re wondering- no, neither Santa nor Los Tres Reyes Magos was ever a thing in our household either. π
3. Country music can get in the way of my good mood.
If it’s just a quick clip of a song, I can get over it. But, if I’m at a gathering and someone immediately starts blasting a country playlist…I would rather dive out the window. There might only be 1 or 2 country songs that don’t do this, but 99.999% of the time, this is the case.
4. I could live off of pizza and boneless buffalo wings…and fries.
These are literally my favorite foods, unfortunately not the healthiest. I know there are healthier alternatives like cauliflower wings and sweet potato fries, but they just don’t compare to the real thing.
5. I’m a complete homebody and introvert.
Thanks to this, these times of staying-at-home haven’t been too hard on me mentally. I’d much rather have a night in than go out. When it comes to socializing, I have my awkward moments at times, but do mostly well around a group of people. Not gonna lie though, when I get home I feel 100% in my element again. I definitely prefer keeping to myself, which makes it kinda odd that I started a blog where I share a bunch with the world.
6. Sour candy and scary/action movies are my favorite.
My dad has contributed to my love for action movies since he always finds really good ones to watch together, but during the pre-covid days, I always looked forward to going to the movies with David. Most of the time, we’d stop by the gas station or grocery store first to get some more reasonably-priced candies and snacks. My favorite candy is anything sour, but specifically Sour Skittles and Airheads Extremes. Although we haven’t gone to the movies in over a year, we’ve still seen some really good ones at home. A few favorites include Hush, Peppermint, and Death Wish.
7. Halloween and Valentine’s Day are also my favorites.
If I had to pick one, I’d go with Halloween. Partially because fall time is when David and I really started our journey together. Even though we started dating in June 2014, we always say the following fall months were when we “fell” for each other (corny, I know). But there’s just SO much more to do during the fall and something about the crisp air that’s unique to that time of year.
Any who, my favorite thing about Halloween are the haunted houses. But not the kiddy ones from Worlds of Fun. The actual scary ones in town like Edge of Hell, The Beast, and Chambers of Edgar Allan Poe. I get startled pretty easily so going to those are always a blast for me. π€ͺ Not so much for David, who comes out of there with hearing damage from my deathly screams.
Valentine’s Day is my second favorite. It wasn’t always that way, especially in elementary school when it felt like a competition on who got the most valentines in their brown paper bag. BUT, the reason why I like it now is mostly because of all the pink and red tones everywhere you go (pink is my favorite color) and the seasonal heart-shaped candy that comes out. David and I don’t really celebrate it except for the first year that we were dating. That was the first and only time we got each other gifts and made more of an occasion out of it. But nowadays, we’ll get some candy and snacks for a movie night. Last year we also ordered a heart-shaped pizza, but this year I found some heart-shaped pans at Walmart so I plan on making something with those!
8. Deathly afraid of heights and rollercoasters.
The last rollercoaster I went on was at Universal Studios when I was 10 called Revenge of the Mummy. I’m not sure why I was feeling brave that day and didn’t just sit it out with my mom, but after that ride I promised myself I’d never get on another one again. The feeling of not being able to breathe is something I’ll never forget and this even happens when I get on a ferris wheel. You can ask David about that experience π
9. I’m 100% positive I have Misophonia.
What is this you ask? According to WebMD, “Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable given the circumstance. Those who have misophonia might describe it as when a sound “drives you crazy.” Their reactions can range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee. The disorder is sometimes called selective sound sensitivity syndrome.”
My most common reaction is feeling panic and the need to flee. The triggers for this include chewing sounds, tapping, whistling, and lots of others although it doesn’t happen every time. It also varies by person on who is making the sound.
The first time I realized I had this was when I watched an episode of 20/20. I never knew there was a name associated with it, but it all made sense after watching that episode and doing some research.
10. I never learned to ride a bike, do a cartwheel, or anything athletic in general.
When I was about 7 or 8, the school bus dropped me off at home and everyone on the bus saw my bike outside my house that still had training wheels on it!!! π Needless to say, I got teased about it, but clearly, it wasn’t enough to make me want to learn how to ride without them.
I also never learned to do a cartwheel, the closest I got to this was being able to do a somersault…so not very close at all.
Growing up, I wasn’t very athletic. The only sport that I was ever interested in was ballet, but it could never make the budget. Later on in 9th grade, I took a volleyball camp during the summer and really liked it at first, until we had to run for conditioning. And lastly, something not very many people know at all- I tried out for my school’s dance team with ZERO experience besides 2 weeks of “pre-tryouts”. What gave me the guts to do this? I have NO idea, but no. I did not make the team. π
Summary
I hope you enjoyed reading some random things about me! I could add some more to the list, but I’ll leave it at that for now. If you’d like to leave something about yourself, please do so in the comments below! π
